Winter Storm Fern: Massive Snow, Ice, and Dangerous Cold Set to Slam Much of the U.S.

“Winter Storm Fern: Dangerous Ice and Heavy Snow Sweep Across 30+ States.”

Millions of people from Texas and the Southern Plains to the Northeast are expected to be affected by a strong winter storm called Winter Storm Fern, which is expected to deliver crippling ice, freezing rain, heavy snow, and dangerously low temperatures. This storm may be one of the biggest of the season, according to forecasters.

What Areas Will Be Hit?

Southern U.S. and Texas: Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are expected to begin in parts of Texas and the Southern Plains by Friday, with icy conditions spreading eastward.

Mid-South & Southeast: The storm is likely to bring a dangerous mix of ice and snow through the Mid-South, Georgia, and the Carolinas, prompting states of emergency and winter storm watches.

Ohio Valley and Northeast: As the system moves east, heavy snow and a hazardous wintry mix are expected in the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast, including areas along the I-95 corridor where significant snowfall could impact travel.

Midwest: The storm may also bring snow and ice to portions of the Midwest, creating slick roads and dangerous driving conditions in states like Missouri and Illinois.

As the storm system passes through, at least 33 states and more than 230 million Americans are under weather advisories for snow, sleet, freezing rain, or ice.

What Hazards Can People Expect?

Heavy snow: Some regions, especially in the Northeast and higher elevations, could see more than a foot of snow.

Dangerous ice: Ice buildup is a major concern, especially in the South and Southeast, where even a quarter inch of ice can make roads slick and damage trees and power lines.

Freezing rain and sleet: These mixed precipitation types can create extremely slippery surfaces and dangerous travel conditions.

Travel disruptions: Airlines are warning of widespread flight delays and cancellations, while rail and road travel may become hazardous.

Power outages: Ice accumulation on power infrastructure could cause outages, especially in areas not accustomed to heavy winter conditions.

Official Actions and Preparations

Several states have already taken steps to prepare:

  • Georgia declared a State of Emergency as the storm approached, urging residents to stock up on essentials and plan for possible power outages and travel issues.

  • Atlanta and central Georgia are under winter storm watches, with authorities warning of significant ice.

  • Transportation departments across many states are pre-treating roads with salt or brine, and disaster response teams are preparing for potential impacts.

What Should People Do?

If you are in the path of the storm, weather officials recommend these steps:

  • Stock Up: Make sure you have enough food, water, and medicine for several days.

  • Stay Home: Avoid driving unless it is absolutely necessary.

  • Stay Informed: Keep a battery-powered radio or your phone charged to check for local weather updates.

A winter storm with dangerous weather is predicted from the South into the Northeast, far into the weekend and early next week, Fern is expected to be a widespread and destructive winter event.
